Krafton Inc has announced that it has begun development on a video game adaptation of the fantasy novel The Bird That Drinks Tears. The game itself does not have a name . The original fantasy novel series has been written by Lee Young-do, and is a huge series in South Korea. The aim of this game is to bring more awareness to The Bird That Drinks Tears, while adapting a story for it. The game is in very early development so no release date or platforms have yet been announced.
The fantasy world of The Bird That Drinks Tears is composed of four races; Rekkon, Tokebi, Nhagi, and Humans. The Rekkon are a warrior race of giant birds who obtain weapons just made for them from the Final Forge. The Tokebi are based upon Korean goblins and are the mages of the group. They have skill with fire and have no fear of death as they have an eternal life as Orusin. The Nhagi are a reptile race found in the south of the world among the jungles. The humans are found in the North and have the largest population, occupying a number of cities. A global event pits members of these races together though that is kept a bit vague in the description.
Ian McCaig, the Design Director for this new project, said “‘The Bird that Drinks Tears is unlike any other fantasy story I have read, with fresh new ways of exploring human nature. That’s what attracts me most. It’s an epic on a par with The Lord of the Rings or Dune. The fantasy world is fresh and visceral, mingling traditional archetypes with dream and nightmare images that are wholly original. I was working on my own projects at the time; engaging with this meant putting them all aside. It needed to be something incredibly special for me to do that. As it turns out, it was.’”
