The stellar fighting game Dragon Ball FighterZ is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and will be upgraded with new rollback netcode in a later update. Finally!

Arc System Works is now hard at work on new-generation versions of their 2D fighting game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, which will enhance the already fantastic-looking game to take more advantage of the newer consoles’ greater power, as well as make the game even more responsive to player inputs – Microsoft has made strides to lower controller input for Xbox Series X|S, as well.

More important for fans of the game is that there will also be an update to add rollback netcode to the game. Rollback netcode has become effectively an industry standard for fighting games, helping to greatly smooth out online play through latency that is inherent to online gaming.

The one catch is that this will seemingly only be coming to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC versions of the game, leaving the PS4, Xbox One and Switch versions in the lurch. This would also seem to suggest that this might not be a free upgrade from the last generation, with details of the upgrade path to be made in due course. We’ve asked Bandai Namco for clarification on these points.

The game in general is also reaching the end of its active support by Arc System Works. A patch released in the last few weeks has made the final set of planned balance adjustments and there are also no more plans to add new characters. The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S upgrade will likely be seen as the absolute definitive release of this fantastic fighter.

Released back in 2018, Dragon Ball FighterZ was a major hit for Arc System Works, followed by numerous updates and character additions. In our glowing review, Dave wrote:

“2018 is off to a strong start with Dragon Ball FighterZ an early contender for this year’s best fighting game.  By shattering some boundaries, Dragon Ball FighterZ has combat that’s more than worth getting into, but also a diverse roster and some phenomenal presentation. The Story Mode could have been improved if it were more streamlined, but it’s a mere blemish on an otherwise spectacular game.”
