The bundled PlayStation Plus Essential games for September 2022 have leaked, with a trio of gaming freebies coming the way of subscribers to any tier of the PlayStation Plus subscription service, with Need for Speed Heat the headline act. Expect this line up to be confirmed later today before being made available on Tuesday 6th September.

When will PS Plus September 2022 games officially be announced and released?

Traditionally PlayStation Plus’ free monthly games have always been announced on the last Wednesday of every month at 4.30 PM UK time with the games going live the following Tuesday morning. This means we can expect Sony to confirm the free games coming to all tiers of PS Plus will be confirmed today on Wednesday 31st August, and will then be made available on Tuesday 6th September.

What will the PS Plus September 2022 games be?

The July 2022 PS Plus Essential leak has come from the tried and tested source of billbil-kun, a member of French deals site Dealabs. They have an excellent track record going all the way back to the middle of 2021, accurately leaking the games from both PS Plus and Xbox’s Games with Gold. Here’s the three games:

  • Need for Speed Heat (PS4)
  • Granblue Fantasy: Versus (PS4)
  • TOEM (PS5)

Is this a good month for PS Plus subscribers? Well, let’s dive into each game you’ll be getting.

Need for Speed Heat was the last game released under the leadership of Ghost Games, taking the street racing franchise to a Florida-like setting for its 25th anniversary. In our review, Nick awarded it a solid 8/10, saying “Need for Speed Heat is the best the series has been in a while. It’s not perfect by any stretch, but it has a charm that reminds me of the Underground days of old. Now that’s a NfS game I can get down with.”

Meanwhile, Granblue Fantasy: Versus throws you into the arena of an anime fighting game from the masters at Arc System Works. On this occasion, though, a few things held it back with a lacking single player of particular note. Still, if you’re looking for a new multiplayer fighting game to try, then this might be worth your while. Here’s our Granblue Fantasy: Versus review.

Toem Camera Controls

And finally, TOEM brings a rather unique adventure to PS Plus, handing you a black and white camera and sending you out into a monochrome world to take pictures, and complete tasks. In our TOEM review, Nic said, “TOEM is a vibe. There’s something immediately strange and enticing about a greyscale (what photographer types would call black and white) photography game. It’s a strange quirk, but one that works incredibly well, both mechanically and for its the storyline.”

Can I still download the August 2022 PlayStation Plus Games?

Absolutely! The PlayStation Plus games for August includes the excellent Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 remake, reviving the classic extreme sports series for modern systems, the RPG-infused Yakuza: Like a Dragon, which has set out a new style of gameplay to the Japanese crime drama series, and the indie horrors of Little Nightmares. You have right up until the new games go live next week to grab them.

What’s with the whole PlayStation Plus relaunch?

The PlayStation Plus relaunch has now rolled out around the world, transforming the PS Plus we once knew into a three tiered subscription service that bundles in and expands what was once PlayStation Now. The classic PS Plus is now called PS Plus Essential, giving access to online multiplayer gaming, cloud save backups, exclusive offers and at least 2 free monthly games. PS Plus Extra then adds a catalogue of PS4 and PS5 games into the mix, while PS Plus Deluxe and Premium (depending on your region) adds older PS2, PS1 and PSP game emulation, and game streaming for PS3 and other titles.
