Square Enix has announced the release date for Tactics Ogre: Reborn, the remastered tactical RPG coming out for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC on 11th November, 2022.
The announcement kind of confirms a leak from the end of last month, which pinned November down as the release month, but got the date a little bit wrong.
Tactics Ogre: Reborn is a remaster of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, a 2010 PSP remake of the mid-90s original. We’re truly down the rabbit hole with this, but Tactics Ogre: Reborn promises converted high-definition graphics, and updated battle system and completely reworked audio. That includes fully-voiced cutscenes for both English and Japanese, as well as re-recorded background music from Hitoshi Sakimoto.
Key gameplay changes include a switch to a unit-by-unit levelling system instead of class-wide improvements, revamped battle AI, quicker battle pace, auto-save and an overhaul of the controls and UI.
Set in the Valerian Isles, you find yourself caught in the middle of a civil war following decades of peace. Three warring factions are all vying for supremacy, and you – a young man called Denam Pavel – simply fight to find a path to freedom and justice. Your choices will affect how the story unfolds around you, with multiple endings to be found.
Square Enix has been regularly dipping into and reviving parts of its back catalogue, bringing them to audiences new and old. Of course, there’s blockbuster remakes like the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, which is about as big budget as you can get, and there’s also more niche titles like Live A Live receiving remakes within the HD-2D art style of Octopath Traveller. Tactics Ogre: Reborn is somewhere in the middle-ground, though an interestingly expansive project considering what it could have been. Certainly it’s one to keep an eye on, whether you played it on PSP or are a tactical RPG fan that never had one.
