T-Mobile tech leader to retire; Curi Bio and CrowdCow appoint CEOs; and more – GeekWire

— Joe Heitzeberg is stepping down as CEO of CrowdCow, the Seattle-based meat and seafood marketplace he co-founded in 2015. Elizabeth Liu, the company’s vice president of marketing, will take on the role.

Liu has been with the startup since its inception and previously spent 15 years in e-commerce roles, including as marketing director at Wayfair, product manager for payments at Amazon, and in a business development and strategic partnership role at Zulilly.

The company also promoted Saba Kalaimani to the role of chief operating officer, from vice president of finance.

Heitzeberg will remain with the company as chairman of the board.

“It’s been an incredible journey from the early days of testing the elevator pitch with random people at a Starbucks, to becoming an industry leader in connecting consumers to high quality, sustainable meat and seafood,” said Heitzeberg in a LinkedIn post announcing the changes.

— Seattle-based drug screening startup Curi Bio named a new CEO, Nicholas Geisse, who succeeds Michael Cho. Geisse has served the company for more than five years as chief science officer and previously held scientific, commercial, product development and management roles for Asylum Research, which was acquired by Oxford Instruments.

Cho will continue with the biotech company in a corporate and legal strategy capacity. Curi Bio raised $10 million in December 2021 to advance its cell-based screening platform.

— Ulf Ewaldsson will become president of technology at T-Mobile, replacing Neville Ray, who plans to retire.

Ewaldsson has worked at T-Mobile for four years and currently serves as executive vice president and chief network officer for the company. He previously held leadership roles at Ericsson for twelve years, most recently as as advisor to the CEO.

Ray served T-Mobile for 23 years, ushering the company from 2G to 5G technology, and plans to step down later this year.

— Qumulo, a Seattle-based startup that helps companies manage large datasets, added two new leaders.

  • Ryan Farris, vice president of product, was previously chief technology officer at Anitian, and also served as a product and engineering leader at Amazon, where he worked with AWS MediaStore and CloudFront.
  • Brandon Whitelaw, vice president of strategic partnerships, was previously at Amazon where he as responsible for sales and market strategy for AWS’ storage services, and also held sales and marketing roles at Dell EMC.

— Pittsburgh medical documentation company Abridge appointed Amazon AI researcher Zachary Lipton as chief scientific officer. Lipton served as a visiting scientist at Amazon for six years and has served as a scientific advisor for Abridge for four years. He is also an assistant professor of machine learning at Carnegie Mellon University.

— IT services and consulting company Slalom promoted Sharon Lynch to lead its North America Slalom build business, which connects customers with software engineering services. Lynch previously served as a managing director at Slalom and previously was a director of professional services at Tribold and a manager at Accenture.

— Two University of Washington researchers have been named Sloan Fellows, an award that recognizes early-career researchers as next-generation leaders.

  • Leilani Battle, an assistant professor in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering. Battle, who co-leads the UW’s Interactive Data Labs, researches the interactive visual exploration of massive datasets.
  • Jonathan Zhu, an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics. His research focuses on curved surfaces and their theory and geometry.
