The eternally popular SpongeBob SquarePants is back in a brand new 3D platforming adventure with the freshly revealed SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake. It’s coming soon to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.
The Cosmic Shake rips SpongeBob and Patrick out of Bikini Bottom for an adventure across a multitude of Wishworlds, each one with a unique setting and set of rules to follow. The handful of levels featured in the announcement trailer saw them first in Halloween Rock Bottom with Gary having been transformed by evil Halloween candy. What follows is a platforming level where you need to avoid Gary’s gaze and time your jumping and battling to not get caught.
After that it was trek back to prehistoric times, riding around on rock boulders in lava rivers, leaping between man sponge-eating lilypads and more. Then was a world themed around washing up and fighting crime as RockyBob, there’s the Wild West Jellyfish Fields, and more.
Announced back in 2021, it looks like a pleasantly wild and varied adventure, and it’s coming from a studio that’s got plenty of experience with SpongeBob SquarePants. Purple Lamp was last seen having made Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, the remake of the PS2 era platformer that was released in early 2020. In our review for that game Thomas wrote:
SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated is a solid remake that perhaps stays a little too true to the original. The updated visuals bring the game more inline with the original cartoon series, but some dated game design holds the port back from being truly exceptional.
It’s part of a pattern that we’ve seen with THQ Nordic, of remastering licenses that they’ve picked up before reviving them with full on sequels. Here’s hoping The Cosmic Shake ends up on the better end of the spectrum for it.
