While the game’s first post-launch season of content was due to arrive on 9th August with the current MultiVersus open beta pre-season ending the day before, developer Player First Games pushed it back as they looked to tackle certain issues highlighted by the community.
Thankfully, they’ve been able to act quickly to make the most of the booming player-base. Season 1 will arrive less than one week after its intended release, and they’ve also confirmed that popular cartoon character Morty will join the roster around a week later on 23rd August.
One of the possible factors leading to the delay was a need to address complaints about some of the character hitboxes and hurtboxes in the game. Game Director Tony Huynh recently stated that the studio has already been working to overhaul the systems and iron out issues. This won’t be in the game for the launch of Season 1, but the initial pass at fixing this will be in the following update.
We did a foundational overhaul on how we do hurt/hitboxes, we’re still finding issues, but things will continue to get better over time. It’ll be in the build after this one. #MultiVersus

Like most live service, free-to-play games, MultiVersus will be supported with regular seasonal updates and content drops throughout with a steady dripfeed of content to keep people engaged. Each season comes in tow with a battle pass loaded with unlockable rewards including rare character skins. The Season 1 battle pass will reportedly cost 950 Gleamium (around $9.99) and will offer 50 reward tiers. Here’s a snapshot of the characters, modes and extra features that will be added through the season:
A recent leak may have revealed a number of future crossover characters, including The Joker, The Hound, Samurai Jack, Daffy Duck, and Mortal Kombat’s Scorpion.
Having played an earlier build of the game, we walked away fairly impressed. MultiVersus doesn’t shy away from being compared to a certain Nintendo series, yet manages to weave in enough intriguing ideas of its own to entice Super Smash Bros fans. For example, there’s a big emphasis on team composition and support abilities which will help shape the competitive scene. Perhaps the game’s biggest strength is that it will be free-to-play at launch, allowing anyone to download MultiVersus and jump in for a fight.
MultiVersus is available now across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
