Firaxis’ superhero tactical RPG Marvel’s Midnight Suns has been delayed into early 2023 by 2K Games. Not only that, but the last-gen release for PS4, Xbox One and Switch have been postponed even further and will follow the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC release “at a later date.”

“After discussion with the team, we’ve made the decision to move back the launch timing of Marvel’s midnight Suns to ensure we are delivering the best possible experience for our fans,” Firaxis wrote in a now traditional Twitter delay message image. They continued, “We know fans are looking forward to playing marvel’s Midnight Suns and we will use this extra time to make sure we are delivering the best possible experience for everyone. Marvel’s Midnight Suns is easily the biggest game we’ve ever made and we’re incredibly appreciative of all the support players have shard with us throughout the years.”
A game being delayed isn’t really all that surprising these days, and this is the second time the game’s been pushed back, but we were getting pretty darned close to the previously announced release date of 7th October 2022. This is right around the time that the developers would be making the final push to go “Gold” and sent for reproduction to disc roughly 4-8 weeks before launch. Of course, it’s also often a more symbolic milestone when games invariably release with day one patches that can make significant improvements.
Per Axios’ Stephen Totilo, the game will now release within fiscal year 2023, which ends on 31st March 2023 for Take Two Interactive. However, from Take Two’s latest financial call, this only applies for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC versions of the game, the last-gen PS4 and Xbox One release and the Nintendo Switch version are all “TBA”. This will help Firaxis a great deal as they don’t have divert so many resources toward optimising for such a wide spread of consoles, especially when they’re on the lower end of the power spectrum.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is an adaptation of 1992’s Rise of the Midnight Sons cross-over event in the Marvel comics universe and will feature twelve playable characters, some familiar, some less so. Magik from the X-Men and Nico Minoru from the Runaways are two such characters. More prominent characters include Captain America, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man and Wolverine. Brand new superhero The Hunter, who is resurrected to fight against Lilith, mother of demons, is also part of the game.
Of late, Firaxis has been doing character showcases, featuring heroes like Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange in dedicated spotlight videos.
