Publisher Square Enix and developer Luminous Productions recently put out a short trailer for Forspoken, giving us the first proper look at protagonist Frey Holland’s personality.
Fans weren’t happy and have been torching the clip for days due to its cringe-inducing dialogue, which features Frey talking in ironic quips like something you’d see and hear in a Marvel film, not a Japanese RPG.
Here’s the infamous new trailer:
A beautiful and cruel new land? Twisted monsters? An array of magical abilities? Sentient jewellery!?

“So let me get this straight,” Frey said. “I’m somewhere that’s not what I would call Earth.” Brace yourselves for the next line of dialogue:
“I’m seeing freaking dragons, and – oh yeah! – I’m talking to a cuff! Yeah, OK, that is something I do now.” The majority of comments say the gameplay looks fine – another Square Enix ARPG – but the character(s) are very lame.
“I do magic, kill jacked-up beasts, I’ll probably fly next,” says the last quip. Like holy gosh, I hope Frey’s adventure turns out to be as visually interesting as the footage thus far – maybe we’ll have to play it on mute.
Forspoken was recently delayed to January 24, 2023 and will launch across Windows PC (via a Steam, the Microsoft Store, and the Epic Games Store) and PlayStation 5.
