Embracer Group has announced that it was going to once again open its wallets wide and buy anything they could get their hands on.

Their announced purchases were large and varied, so let’s take a look at what they have gained control of:

  • Limited Run Games, makers of limited physical runs of digital only and classic games.
  • Singtrix, the company behind the tech of the Guitar hero and Rockband series.
  • Tuxedo Labs, the studio behind the highly successful, Teardown
  • Tripwire Interactive, the developer and Publisher behind Killing Floor and Rising Storm 2
  • Tatsujin, Embracer’s first Japanese studio who had worked on classic Toaplan games such as Truxton, Snow Bros, and Flying Shark
  • Bitwave Games, a Swedish studio that specializes in retro games
  • Gioteck, a European gaming accessory brand with over two decades of history
  • An undisclosed study purchase that is said to be the 3rd or 4th largest of the total purchases

That’s a massive haul for Embracer Group for sure, but easily the biggest announcement to come out of Embracer Group was the announcement that the company had entered into an agreement to purchase MIDDLE-EARTH ENTERPRISES, and with that, the IP rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

It may actually be impossible to overstate how big of a purchase this is for Embracer Group who have now gained access to the biggest fantasy universe ever created.

This major acquisition will give Embracer group the rights to the intellectual property catalogue and worldwide rights to the films, video games, board games, merchandise, theme parks, and stage productions relating to the iconic fantasy literary works of The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien.

It will also grant them the same rights for anything Middle-earth related literary works that have been authorized by the Tolkien Estate and HarperCollins.

This is no doubt a huge day for Embracer Group who have been a silent vacuum in the industry as of late. Things will no doubt continue to improve for the company as time goes on. We will have to see what they are willing to purchase next.
