Disney Plus and Spotify appear to be heading to PS5 as native apps, according to supposed leaks. Currently, both apps are available on Sony’s console but as PS4 backward compatible versions. The Disney Plus comes about from an apparent appearance on the PS5 backend, with the app codenamed as Vader. There is no detail to the difference between the apps. A few months ago the app was updated to support 4K streaming so it could just be a case of being easier to run and update for the PS5. The leak for this comes via Reddit.
Another apparent leak is for a native Spotify app on PS5. This leak comes from the PlayStation Game Size Twitter account, which monitors the PlayStation server backend as well. Again, there is no details on what this version of the Spotify app will have over the PS4 version, nor is there a release date as to when it could be released. That is the same for Disney Plus which also has no release date either.
Recently, it was confirmed that Sony would be dropping the Accolades feature on PS5. In a statement, Sony said,“In fall of 2022, the Accolades feature on PlayStation 5 will no longer be supported. The feature hasn’t seen the level of usage we anticipated, so we are refocusing our efforts. We encourage the community to continue to send positive messages to one another.”
Sony hasn’t been afraid to cull features that haven’t been used enough, killing off PS Communities on PS4 last year, and there are still quite a few areas of the PlayStation 5 system that could use improvement. Over the past 18 months, Sony has continually iterated on the Game Base chat and social aspects of the system, they’ve shifted directions with how voice chat parties work, and are currently testing 1440p support and folder-like Gamelists. There’s also the PlayStation Stars loyalty scheme, which will reward players for taking part in tournaments, earning particular trophies, and simply checking in to play games each month.
