Ubisoft has decided to postpone the shutdown of Assassin’s Creed multiplayer servers across several titles. Originally, the company had planned to take down online services for multiple titles from the series, including Assassin’s Creed II, Brotherhood, Revelations, III, and Liberation HD. This was due to commence on September 1, 2022, and would have killed off the multiplayer component for three of these games.
However, Ubisoft has performed a surprising U-turn, giving these online components a temporary stay of execution. Until October 1st, that is. This is most likely due to the backlash the publisher faced when it was revealed that the server shutdown would also prohibit users from accessing singleplayer DLC. It’s been confirmed that this content will still be available after October 1st, with PC players being required to “activate” this DLC before the date of decommissioning. This is good news fo the minority of fans still playing online matches in Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, Revelations, and Assassin’s Creed III. An overlooked highlight of the franchise, these multiplayer modes were an absolute blast, encouraging assassins to outwit their targets through stealth and crowd manipulation. For any trophy and achievement hunters out there, this is your last chance to get 100% in some of these games.
Thankfully, the Assassin’s Creed multiplayer servers are still live for Black Flag. Having recently gone back and played a dozen or so matches, it holds up though suffers from being released at a time when every game was stuffed with obscenely inelegant microtransactions.
Looking ahead, the flagship Ubisoft franchise has been back in the spotlight once again with the leak (and hasty reveal) of Assassin’s Creed Mirage. There are claims that this will be a smaller-scale Assassin’s Creed game that goes back to the roots of the franchise with a more purist stealth gameplay focus. RPG levelling and some of the sprawl of the recent trilogy of Assassin’s Creed games will seemingly be put to the wayside.
