The Brazilian CADE meeting over Microsoft purchase of Activision Blizzard is the gift that keeps on giving – the latest claim points to Sony blocking games coming to Game Pass.
So far, we’ve seen Microsoft call the Call of Duty franchise replaceable, Sony’s arguments “incoherent”, and even found out how many Xbox One units sold in the last console generation.
Now, we have another interesting accusation against Sony, with the claim that the company is paying developers and publishers to keep their games off Xbox Game Pass.
“Microsoft’s ability to continue expanding Game Pass has been hampered by Sony’s desire to inhibit such growth,” Microsoft said during the hearing (from court docs, via The Verge).
They added, “Sony pays for ‘blocking rights’ to prevent developers from adding content to Game Pass and other competing subscription services.”
The has just been one of the many bombshells that have dropped since the CADE hearing began over Microsoft’s desire to purchase Activision Blizzard for a whopping $68.7 billion.
Whether Microsoft’s accusations are true or not is yet to be seen, but it is important to remember that this wouldn’t be the first time that Sony has been willing to throw around its weight when it came to other platforms.
During the Epic Games v. Apple trial, it came to light that Sony is the only company that is forcing developers to pay money in order for their games to include cross-play integration.
It’s not surprising, Sony does have the biggest console marketshare, especially last console generation so it makes sense that they would throw around that weight where they could.
